SENIORS

Mazenod 9.12.66 def by Beaumaris 20.15.135

After getting off the mark against Ajax, we looked to back that performance up with a strong performance against an experienced Beaumaris side. Jack Sullivan came into the side to make his senior debut, while a few late withdrawals gave others an opportunity to impress. We started off well, but more polish and composure around goals gave Beaumaris the lead at quarter time. A relatively even second quarter followed with both sides trying to gain the ascendency. After going in at half time only four goals, Beaumaris showed their class in the third quarter and took the game away from us. Beaumaris’ ball use and structure was too much for the young Nodders and although our intent and endeavour could not be questioned, Beaumaris ran out comfortable winners. There were plenty of positives to take from the game, including strong performances down back from Christian Poretti, Tom Riley and Tom McKenna, while Rob Mann and Josh Muling worked tirelessly all day. This week we again face another strong side, with a big challenge for the group heading to face Old Carey on their home deck. Hope to see you all there!

Goal Kickers: L. Welsford 3, B. Phibbs 2, S. Welsford, C. Martino, R. Thomas, S. Deegan
Best Players: J. Muling, C. Poretti, T. McKenna, D. Izon, L. Welsford, S. Deegan

RESERVES

Mazenod 4.4.28 def by Beaumaris 16.14.110

The reserves took on the much fancied Beaumaris another team down from A grade.

The first quarter was a good battle with us trying to hold onto the ball but they showed their class and got 3 goals onto the board to our none. Same story for the 2nd quarter with 4 goals to none. The 3rd we picked up our game a bit and kicked 3 goals for the quarter and almost had a 4th but the siren sounded with Egan about to kick a goal in the square. Last quarter they ran away a bit and and ended up winners by 80 points. Disappointing result but the boys attack cannot be questioned and a win will come soon enough. Mic Chambo left nothing out there and benny gannon kicked 2 in his first reserves game for the club.

Goal Kickers: B. Gannon 2, M. Sier, F. Palleschi

Best Players: M. Chamberlain, J. Van Rensburg, B. Riley, D. Fowler, W. Campbell, J. Egan

THIRDS

Mazenod 9.12.66 def by Old Geelong 10.11.71

After another slow start to the 1st Quarter, we found ourselves behind after the first siren.  Missed opportunities in front of goal and some lapses of concentration at different times at the other end of the ground meant that for the first time this year we had to come from behind.  The loss of White in the first 20 seconds, Di Petta before half time and Noone during the 3rd Quarter left us down in the midfield.  But this was mostly covered by Reed, Ruffolo,Macleod and Micallef. The 3rd Quarter saw us outscore Old Geelong by 4 goals to 1, and set up what may have been another great team effort. Unfortunately we tired in the last 10 minutes opening it for OG. The last 3 minutes was played at a very high intensity, with Hansen, Bickers and the De Bono brothers giving all they had.  On the plus side we welcomed L. Mceniry, S. Balloch, N.Klavins, S.Oldman,S.Bickers and A. Dipetta into our fold.  Special thanks to John Mann who worked the team board for us, I didn't realize how difficult it was to have 6 on the bench.  Also thanks to Joel Fitzsimmons who acted as runner for the day, after just arriving back in OZ after a few big days overseas.

Goal Kickers: S. Davis 4, P. Iacovangelo 2, A. Noone 2, R. Kayev 1
Best Players: S. Davis, L. McEniry, S. Mann, A. Noone, M. Giuliano, A. Bortoli, S. Reed

Goal Assists: A. Noone 3, S Reed 2.

Golden Fist Award: D. Hansen

Rising Star Award: S. Bickers.

WOMEN BLUES

Mazenod 2.4.16 def by St Mary's Salesian 10.8.68

Our third game of the season began with a great start, winning the first quarter.  Intensity was high, the girls were energetic and we applied tough defensive pressure.  As the game went on St Mary’s Salesian showed high levels of skill and our many forward fifty entries failed to convert into winning goals. The positive spirit and determination of our team resulted in winning the last quarter.  These are good signs of improvement and we look forward to our future success.

Goal Kickers: J. Bortoli, K. Watson
Best Players: B. Charman, C. Maguire, K. Watson, A. Anderson, S. Biviano, K. Van Os

Claudia Maguire

WOMEN BLACKS

Mazenod 3.6.24 def by St Mary's Salesian 13.14.92

In round 3 the Mazenod Women's Blacks played against St. Mary's Salesian for a very warm midday clash. St. Mary's came out firing however our back line impressed us all with their defensive pressure which limited their scoring opportunities. The second half was even more exciting, with both Carly and Erin kicking their first goals in a game. Chloe later scored our final goal to finish the game. When finished we were exceptionally proud of our girls who did not give up once and kept pushing throughout the contest. Impressive efforts from every woman involved.

Goal Kickers: C. Muckner, E. Bunter and C. Anderson
Best Players: M. Canavan, B. Bunter, E. Bunter, M. Bunter, M. Kaye, T. Riley

Michaela Anderson

UNDER 19 BLUES

Mazenod 16.11.107 def Hampton Rovers 5.5.35

We travelled to Hampton for an afternoon third round contest against the Rovers. On a large oval in good condition, in fine weather, with little wind, this game would be a good examination of our skills and fitness levels.

Within the first 11 minutes of the game starting, four goals were scored. Three to us and one to the opposition. At the 3 minute mark, Jarryd Raffa passed to Lachie Noone, who posted his first goal of the season. The game was competitive, willing and good to watch. It did present with challenges for our team though. While the ball was repeatedly being driven into the forward fifty, our forward options were a little disappointing. Nonetheless, the boys stayed right in the game throughout the next 2 quarters. Having set a target to score 5 goals in the last quarter, the boys did even better and delivered 6, thanks to 2 goals from Arlyn, as well as Sherlock. Raffa continued his solid game booting his 5th goal, displaying his long and strong kicking dominance.

Another challenge met with another four points achieved. Our good start to the season continues.

Goal Kickers: J. Raffa 5, L. Sherlock 3, J. D’Angelo 2, A. Khaiyath 2, M. Mariette 2, L. Noone, P. Ilic

Best Players: L. Noone, J. McKenna, L. Sherlock, J. Raffa, J. Neil, A. Tellis

Damien Sherlock - U19 Blues Coach

UNDER 19 BLACKS

Mazenod 13.16.94 def St Bedes / Mentone Tigers 11.7.73

No doubt, it was nice to see the Blacks win their first game of the season against a very strong and competitive St. Bedes. The boys had a strong start to the game, booting 6 goals, to the 3 goals from St Bedes, however, dropped their guard in the second, with missed opportunities leading to a goalless 2nd quarter before the half time break.

Much improvement was shown coming into the 2nd half of the match, with 5 goals being scored, giving us the comfortable lead into the final stage. St Bedes made a late charge to try and steal the match, bu it wasn't enough for the Tigers, as our boys celebrated a memorable win to kick start our season.

Matt Backhouse - U19's Black Coach

WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND THE CLUB?

CLUB VOLUNTEERS

Thanks to Rosie Welsford for putting up her hand to take on the role of coordinating our Thursday meals. Rosie and Elyse D'Angelo have done a power of work leading into the season arranging all of the uniforms and club apparel. The Club is privileged to have such dedicated people putting their hand up for multiple roles - what can YOU do to help share the workload and ensure that volunteering for our great club remains enjoyable and sustainable??? Even a small contribution can help ease the workload involved in running a local football managed solely by volunteers.

If you can assist with one Thursday during the season, please contact Rosie at rwelsford@mazenod.vic.edu.au
