FROM THE COACHES DESK

After the completion of our second practice match this weekend, the players will have completed over 30 training sessions, two practice matches and an arduous Saturday morning session at Lysterfield Lake. All this in preparation for what shapes as an exciting season 2018. The preseason has been challenging and pushed many players to new limits and I have been impressed with how they have responded. I would like to thank Josh Webster for all is work with the fitness and GPS data and all the coaches for their assistance and diligence during the preseason. It was also pleasing to see very strong numbers in the Under 19’s and this is testament to the work put in my coaches Damien Sherlock and Matt Backhouse.

It was great to see all the hard work that all the players have been putting in, come to fruition on the weekend against St. Bedes. To be very competitive against a Premier A side for three quarters, holds us in good stead for the year ahead. Some of the better players on the day included Gus Patti, Dean Izon, Chris Campbell and Aidan Brand-Oliver.

The players now get their last chance to impress with a clash against reigning EFL Division 2 Premiers, Knox. We look forward to the challenge and hopefully a number of players can further enhance their case for selection in the Round 1 team for the match against University Blacks.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND THE CLUB?

COMMUNITY SUPPORT - Ubuntu Ugandan Tour Group

Donate your old (but still usable) footy boots for a visiting group of African school students that will attending Mazenod College early next term. All donated boots will be utilised by the visiting students here in Melbourne and on their return to Uganda. Boots can be handed to Rosie Welsford or Paddy McKenna. This is one small way of how we can contribute back to the community and those less fortunate than ourselves.

WELL WISHES

A number of female players had their first competitive football experience in their practice match last week against St Bede's. Unfortunately Steph Mann sustained a serious leg injury and underwent surgery for a fractured fibula on Tuesday. Issy Farrar also broke her leg on Saturday, but this one was on the netball court. Our best wishes and support go out to both girls as they begin their recovery, and we hope to see them both back out on the track as soon as possible.

AFLX HITS MAZENOD

Some great news out of the College this week with old boy Matthew Boyd paying a visit and joining the students in a friendly hit out of AFLX. The students team featured a number of current Nodder players and they were thrilled to be playing alongside such a fantastic role model. A 300 game premiership player and All-Australian, Matt has been a wonderful supporter of Mazenod over many years and we still have our fingers crossed that he may don the Nodder jumper for a competitive match with the Senior team at some point in the future!! The staff team also featured some notable Nodder names - Phibbs, Mann, Muling, Connolly, Vissenjoux on the park, with Fr Fini donning the coaches vest and inspiring his team to victory.
